The Notebook

A chronological journal — bench notes, reading notes, questions, and observations.

Short entries, dated in the margin: what I learned today, a reading note, a historical clue, an experiment, a quotation, an unfinished thought. These are pages from a working scholar’s journal, kept in the order they were written.

  3. The notebook begins

This is the first page. A place has been ruled for bench notes, reading notes, questions, and observations. Real entries will follow as the work proceeds. Nothing here is invented to fill the space — an unknown is simply left unknown.
